Streamly — Your own branded audio & video platform for WordPress | Adviespraktijk OCW
Version 2.5.3 · WordPress 6.0+ · PHP 8.0+

Your own branded
audio & video platform.

Streamly turns WordPress into a listening platform that carries your name — not Spotify's or YouTube's. A full-screen now-playing screen, lyrics that scroll in sync, a male / female / music-only version of every recording, resume-where-you-left-off, star reviews and access control. All on your own domain, in your own colours.

A real player, not an embed. Your media, your database, your listeners.

Why this plugin exists

Big platforms borrow
your audience — and keep it.

On Spotify or YouTube

  • Your recordings sit under their brand, in their player, next to their ads
  • The next-up panel sends your listener straight to a competitor
  • Play data, progress and reviews live in someone else's dashboard
  • Gating a track behind a paid membership is awkward or plainly impossible
  • A public file URL stays public forever, whoever it gets passed to

With Streamly

  • Everything runs on your domain, in your colours, under your name
  • No recommendations, no ads, no foreign logo anywhere in the player
  • Plays, progress, favourites and reviews sit in your own WordPress tables
  • Open, logged-in-only or per-item free — membership gating with PRO
  • Audio in a private bucket is handed out as a signed link that expires
What's in the free plugin

A real player, hardened
over five major releases.

White-label player

The [streamly_player] shortcode in your brand name, colours, logo, fonts, content labels and share texts. Visitors see your platform, nothing else.

Full-screen now playing

Tap an item and the now-playing screen opens with large artwork, a drag-to-seek bar and 15-second skips — without starting playback, so the listener picks a voice first.

Synced lyrics

Per-item lyrics in LRC format scroll along with the audio, the current line highlighted; tap a line to seek. Timestamp lines in wp-admin with a tap editor while you listen.

Voice variants

Add up to twelve alternative recordings per item — a male voice, a female voice, another language, or a music-only bed. The listener's choice is remembered.

Resume & favourites

Listeners pick up exactly where they left off, keep a favourites list and see per-item play counts — all stored in your own database, never sent anywhere.

Built-in reviews

Star ratings and written reviews, prompted automatically once 80% of an item has been played. No external review service, no embeds, no cookies from third parties.

Access control & previews

Open or logged-in-only, plus a per-item free flag and a preview length (30 seconds by default). Non-members are served only the preview window — never the full file.

Private-bucket streaming

Keep audio in a closed Google Cloud Storage bucket; Streamly signs a link that expires (6 hours by default) so the membership check actually decides who can listen.

Notifications

Email on publish through WordPress mail or your own SMTP server, plus optional OneSignal push and Mailchimp / ActiveCampaign webhooks. All opt-in, all your own credentials.

Display shortcodes

Build a landing page from parts: [streamly_items], [streamly_categories], [streamly_category_block], [streamly_blogs] and [streamly_reviews].

REST API

Everything the player uses is public API at /wp-json/streamly/v1/ — items, videos, streaming, previews, lyrics and membership status, plus an authoring endpoint for automated publishing.

7-step setup tour

The onboarding wizard starts on activation and walks you through branding, player page, uploads, features, notifications, your first item and the shortcode. Restart it any time.

How it works

Three steps from install
to your own platform.

01

Add your content

Audio items and videos are ordinary WordPress post types with their own categories and tags. Point them at your Media Library, a Drive or S3 link, or a private cloud bucket, and set who gets access.

02

Brand the player

In the Branding tab you set the brand name, primary and accent colour, background and card colour, logo, font and the words the player uses for your content and categories.

03

Drop the shortcode

Put [streamly_player] on any page. Visitors get search, category filters, playback speed, the now-playing screen, resume, favourites and reviews — on phone and desktop.

Streamly PRO

The free plugin is a complete platform. PRO is for when you sell access.

Start free with the full white-label player. Move to PRO when your content becomes a product: gate it behind a membership, let people install it as an app, and grow it with scheduled push and a hand-picked email digest.

Installable app (PWA)Your platform installs to the home screen — no app store, no separate build. Custom install banner on Android, an "Add to Home Screen" guide on iPhone, offline page in your own colours, an unread badge on the app icon, and an icon set generated from one 512×512 image.
Membership access controlUnlock items per WishlistMember level (WLM 2.x, 3.x and X) or per purchased WooCommerce product or active subscription. Streamly PRO detects which system is active and adapts.
Scheduled push notificationsA OneSignal dashboard with templates, send-now or schedule in your site's own timezone, deep-links to an item and segment targeting. The history keeps every message in full, reuses any of them in one click, and tells you exactly why a failed send failed.
Manual email digestPick the items yourself, filter recipients by membership level or WordPress role, schedule it, and let it go out in batches of fifty over BCC. Full send history included.
Per-item preview windowsOverride the global preview length with a start and end time per item, so every taster starts at the part that actually sells the recording.
Advanced analyticsAn analytics page in wp-admin that goes past the free play counter: returning versus new listeners and play trends over time.

PRO needs the free Streamly plugin active. Updates arrive in wp-admin through the OCW License Server; a licence check is cached for 24 hours with a 7-day grace period if the server is unreachable. If a licence lapses, the free plugin keeps working and the PRO features go dormant — nothing breaks, nothing is deleted.

The openssl extension is used for encrypting credentials and signing cloud links — standard on every host. The PRO app module additionally needs HTTPS and pretty permalinks, and is not available on subdirectory installs or multisite sub-sites, where a root-scope service worker cannot work.

FAQ

What people usually
want to know.

Do my audio and video files get uploaded to a third-party service?

No. Your media stays wherever you host it — the WordPress Media Library, a Drive or S3 link, or your own Google Cloud Storage bucket. Streamly stores only the item's metadata and source URL, in your own WordPress database.

Where do progress, favourites and reviews live?

In your own database, in Streamly's own tables. Nothing is sent to an external service, and no analytics script from anyone else runs in the player.

Can non-members listen to a preview?

Yes. You set a preview length (30 seconds by default), and PRO lets you set a start and end time per item. The preview is served through a proxy that hands out only that window — a non-member never receives the URL of the full recording.

How do I keep paid audio from leaking?

Put it in a private Google Cloud Storage bucket. Streamly signs a link with Google's V4 signing that expires after six hours by default (seven days is Google's maximum), so a shared URL stops working. The service-account key is stored encrypted with AES-256-GCM.

What are voice variants for?

Every item can carry up to twelve alternative recordings — a male voice, a female voice, another language, or a music-only bed. The listener picks one on the now-playing screen and the choice is remembered. With music-only, the synced lyrics work as a read-aloud script, so a parent can narrate the meditation themselves.

Do I need OneSignal, Mailchimp or ActiveCampaign?

No, all three are optional. Email on publish runs through standard WordPress mail or your own SMTP server. Push and the Mailchimp / ActiveCampaign webhooks only fire once you switch them on and enter your own credentials or webhook URL.

What happens when my PRO licence expires?

The free plugin keeps running exactly as it is, and the PRO features go dormant. Nothing is deleted — your items, branding, settings and listener data stay untouched. Renew and PRO wakes up again.

Does the app really work without an app store?

Yes — PRO turns the site itself into an installable app (a PWA). Android shows a custom install banner, iPhone and iPad get an "Add to Home Screen" guide in Safari. It needs HTTPS and pretty permalinks, and does not work on subdirectory installs or multisite sub-sites. Paid content and wp-admin are never cached, so nothing private lands on someone's device.

Do listeners get notifications on their phone?

Yes, with PRO. A push you send from the dashboard arrives as a normal system notification — a banner plus a line in the notification centre — and tapping it opens the item you linked. The installed app also carries an unread badge on its home-screen icon, which clears the moment the app is opened. On Android this works straight from the browser; on iPhone and iPad the app has to be added to the home screen first, which is how Apple gates web push.

Can I automate publishing?

Yes. The REST API at /wp-json/streamly/v1/ includes an authoring endpoint for an item's variants, lyrics, duration and cover, which works with a WordPress application password. An external pipeline can publish without shell access to your site.

Is Streamly affiliated with Spotify, Google, WooCommerce or WishlistMember?

No. Streamly is an independent plugin by Adviespraktijk OCW. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Spotify, Google LLC, OneSignal, Mailchimp (Intuit Inc.), ActiveCampaign LLC, WishlistMember or WooCommerce (Automattic, Inc.). Those names appear only to describe what the plugin can connect to.
